It Comes Down to One Thing: Can It Crumble?
The line between Class A and Class B asbestos is about how easily the material releases its fibres. Bonded (non-friable) asbestos holds its fibres locked in a solid material — it’s handled under a Class B licence. Friable asbestos can be crumbled to powder by hand and releases fibres far more readily — it needs the higher Class A licence. Get the class right and you get the right team, the right controls, and a legal job.
Class B — Bonded (Non-Friable)
Fibres locked into a solid, stable material. Lower-risk when intact, but hazardous once cut, drilled, broken or weathered. HazWreck’s licensed specialty (AD214755).
Typically found as:
- Fibro wall and roof sheeting
- Eaves and soffit linings
- Asbestos-cement fences
- “Super six” corrugated roofing
- Wet-area and bathroom sheeting
Class A — Friable
Soft, crumbly material that releases fibres easily. Higher-risk, and legally requires a separate Class A licence and stricter controls, including air monitoring.
Typically found as:
- Pipe and boiler lagging
- Sprayed insulation / fireproofing
- Some old vinyl backings and millboard
- Degraded, water-damaged material
Why the Licence Class Matters to You
In NSW, the licence isn’t a formality — it’s the law drawing a line around what a removalist is allowed to touch. A Class B licence covers bonded work; friable work requires Class A. A removalist who takes on friable material outside their licence is working illegally and without the controls that job demands — and that’s exactly the kind of corner-cutting that puts your health and your compliance record at risk.

What’s the difference between Class A and Class B asbestos removal?
Class B covers bonded (non-friable) asbestos — solid sheeting, fences and roofing — which is HazWreck’s licensed specialty. Class A covers friable asbestos that can crumble by hand and needs a separate licence. If we find friable material, we stop, advise you, and never work outside our Class B licence.
What is bonded (non-friable) asbestos?
Bonded asbestos is asbestos fibre locked into a solid material like cement sheeting — fibro walls, eaves, roofing, fences. In good condition it holds its fibres firmly and is lower-risk, which is why it falls under a Class B licence. The danger comes when it’s cut, drilled, broken or left to weather and fibres become airborne.
What is friable (Class A) asbestos?
Friable asbestos can be crumbled to powder by hand when dry — think pipe lagging, sprayed insulation and some old backing materials. It releases fibres far more readily, so it carries a higher risk and legally requires a Class A licence. HazWreck is licensed for bonded (Class B) work; if we identify friable material we stop and advise the correct licensed path.
